I just purchased the Canon brand battery grip for my 50D. Everything seems perfect except the vertical shutter release doesn’t preform exactly like the one on the body. Seems to take more pressure to operate the release. Is this normal or do I have an issue?

Probably just a sticky button. Hopefully it will loosen up with a bit of use. Remember that these are pretty long in the tooth now, at best it's likely to be the best part of ten years old, and could be a lot older. The N version came out at the same time as the 40D.

Yes these products do have some age. I bought my 50D new and haven’t been able to justify upgrading, because of the quantity of work I do. I bought this battery grip used on eBay but the thing doesn’t look like it’s been used! Came in the original box, which is also mint, and included all the original packaging, warranty card, manual, strap and AA battery magazine.

I can't speak about that grip as I have never used one. However, if you have some decent AA re-chargeable cells lying about, try the AA battery tray. My gripped 7D2 lasts much longer with AA Nimh cells than the Lithium packs, it shouldn't - but it does!

So, I’ve never used a battery grip before. My main question is, does the vertical shutter release on the battery grips that you’ve used, preform identically to the shutter release on the body of your camera?

I used it tonight to take little league photos. Worked perfect from the first shot to the last. I don’t know how to explain it. Weird!

No it never does,. at least not on the ones I've tried from the lowly oldy timy 10D up to a modern 5D4. They always feel a little different.
So near as I can tell, that's normal.

I agree. The only cameras I have, where the vertical trigger feels the same as the normal one, are the 1DX and 1DX Mark II. But there they are integrated from the beginning, so that's probably why.
Otherwise, typically one of the buttons has a click stop half way, the other just a soft resistance.

Funny you mention 1D, my experiences mirror yours, EXCEPT for my still in service 1D4, where the main shutter release is so worn it is much more finicky than the relatively virgin portrait shutter release. In this cameras case that's the much better button!

OK, but then it's a habit that 1D Mark IV has acquired over time, not got by design.
