We’re huge fans of Eufy as they sell some of the best robot vacuums on the market. Something that we have often noted about the brand is that they have always stuck with the lower end and mid-range of the robovac market – and to great success. However, this all looks set to change with the introduction of the Eufy RoboVac L70 Hybrid. With the RoboVac 15C MAX dominating the mid-range market (and winning our award for best robot vacuum overall), and the 11S MAX doing the same in a lower price bracket, we are intrigued at the possibility of the L70 doing the same but at a kind of price point where it takes on the best that the likes of iRobot and Neato have to offer.

To say we had high hopes when we got our hands on the Eufy RoboVac L70 hybrid would be an understatement. We have even spoken in the past about what Anker’s smart technology brand might be able to achieve if they were to take on the higher end of the market. As of the last revision, the company occupies two of the five spots on our list of the best robot vacuums around, but neither break the £300 barrier.

At this price point, the L70 competes with the likes of the Neato Robotics Botvac D402 and the Samsung VR7000. Crucially, the brand has managed to find a gap between the various Roomba models – the L70 Hybrid is more expensive than several lower-end Roombas like the Roomba 671, but significantly cheaper than their competitor’s higher-end models like the Roomba 981 and i7+.

The good news for anyone with half an eye on this purchase is that a quick look at the specs and features on this model indicates that it was designed with the intention of tackling the higher end models in competing ranges. Laser-guided navigation, mapping and virtual walls without the need for physical boundary strips all give an indication that the L70 Hybrid was created for a high-end robot vacuum user, without necessarily breaching the highest-end price points.

We’ll start, as ever, with the vacuum cleaning potential of this model. Simply put, it does not disappoint. We were somewhat surprised to see just a single side brush, reminiscent of Roombas rather than Eufy RoboVacs. One advantage lower-end models from the same company have over their competitors at those price points is that they can get right up to edges and into corners thanks to the dual side brushes. Fortunately, even with just one of them in place here, the L70 gets the job done. Extensive coverage means that it will reach edges in both directions, and the solitary side brush is sufficient to flick the dirt and dust into its path.

The suction power is incredible. Part of the reason why the RoboVac 15C MAX ranks so highly here at Robovac is the 2,000 Pa suction that can rival models that cost twice as much or more. The RoboVac L70 goes a step further with 2,200 Pa of suction. That makes it not only the strongest Eufy RoboVac at the time of this review, but among the most powerful you can buy today, regardless of how much you plan to spend.

Unless you introduce the L70 into your home having avoided vacuuming for a decade, the chances are that this device will leave your surfaces spotless.

In another first for this generation of Eufy robot vacuums, the L70 also incorporates a mop function for hard floors – hence the ‘Hybrid’ name. We can understand its relative scarcity, as we have encountered some frankly feeble attempts at such functionality in the past. However, in a somewhat shocking turn of events, the RoboVac L70 manages to get it right. This is the first robot vacuum/robot mop combo at this price point where we’ve felt that the mopping facility rivals doing it by hand and you won’t have to grab the mop and bucket afterwards to get the job done properly.

Part of the quality stems from the fact that mopping isn’t just an afterthought as it is with many other models. If you’re happy to take the time to indicate where the hard floors you want mopping are in the app and then to change the attachment, this robovac will use a combination of mopping settings to effectively do the same on your hard floors as it does on carpets while vacuuming.

Eufy does advise that you only use water for mopping rather than additional detergents, but with the ultimate quality of the clean, you might find yourself saving money on cleaning products without much compromise in results.

The L70 runs for 150 minutes on a full charge, so there’s little danger of it falling short, even in larger homes. As expected, if it does run out of juice midway through the job, it will head back to base to charge automatically.

The recommended Eufy model for those that rely on setting boundaries has always been the RoboVac 30C. However, it has never been truly ideal due to the fact that it uses magnetic strips. The robot vacuum itself comes with sensors for those strips that ensure that it won’t cross the line. It gets the job done, but it is not exactly the prettiest solution. Fortunately, the RoboVac L70 takes things to a new level as you can achieve the same results with no additional hardware required.

The L70 crams in full mapping and laser guidance and there is no question that it is the smartest Eufy robot vacuum we have encountered. There is no more guesswork, and the robot vacuum will go exactly where you tell it to. Once it has cleaned a floor once, it will even build a map in the app, which you can use to set no-go zones and boundaries as required, as well as specifying which floors require mopping.

This represents a massive jump in the Eufy range and is the part of the L70 proposition that might convince prospective buyers to shell out around twice as much as they would for the other RoboVacs.

The mapping is not quite perfect, mainly because the app can only remember a single map. If you have two floors in your home – or more – then the L70 will overwrite the previous map to enable it to make a new one on the top floor. It feels like an oversight but, at the same time, it also strikes us as something that can potentially be solved with a software update.

The L70 certainly boasts the connectivity to make updates possible. Unlike its older and cheaper brothers, this model does not come with an infra-red remote control. In fairness, we would not expect someone that requires a remote to spend quite this much on a robot vacuum and the use of such a device would undermine the advanced features that make the L70 special. After all, a remote control that can display and manipulate floor plans would be prohibitively expensive, and that doesn’t match up with Eufy’s famous value for money proposition.

Instead, you’ll find yourself doing most of the work on a mobile app, available for both Android and Apple devices. Whether you simply want to start and stop the robot, or set up elaborate schedules for different rooms, its all possible with just a couple of taps. You can also control the Eufy RoboVac L70 Hybrid with your voice as it is fully compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Home.

• A single side brush means it can occasionally miss dirt in corners

We asked for it and Eufy delivered. We were curious about what the brand would deliver at a higher price point than covered with the likes of the 11S, 15C and 30C models and the L70 is the result. We are tempted to say that this is the best robot vacuum you can hope to get your hands on for around £500 but, as always, you need to take your personal requirements into account. The mop is a great addition, but by no means essential for all users. Similarly, laser navigation and virtual walls are crucial for some homes, but unnecessary in others. The suction is the highest in the range, but there comes a point where you’re paying for more power that you might not need. 2,200 Pa impresses on paper but, in practice, the improvements over the 2,000 Pa of the 15C MAX are negligible.

Overall, anything you spend on the Eufy RoboVac L70 Hybrid is money well spent. You will not find a better robot vacuum/robot mop hybrid for £500. However, in the value for money stakes, we are not quite convinced that the L70 represents twice the quality of the top-rated RoboVac 15C MAX. Suction wise, they are about level as far as results go and the results are the same. The questions you have to ask are whether you need mapping and mopping and, if you do, whether you want to spend around £250 for the privilege. It is worth it in our opinion, but if you just want something to vacuum the floor independently, you’ll make a big saving and achieve similar results with the 15C MAX or 30C. With that said, the Eufy RoboVac L70 Hybrid is still a fantastic price and if we compare it to others around the same price, it is outstanding for the functionality you receive for the price. If the added features over the 15C MAX will be put to good use, it is fully worth the extra investment.
